Very handy mat, Cork can do a lot more than just keep wine safely in its bottle!

2016-02-23

Very handy mat, Cork can do a lot more than just keep wine safely in its bottle!

In fact, there is an unbelievable number of creative and practical uses for this great, eco-friendly material. This is one of our favorite: a mud room mat. Be- sides being a rapidly renewable resource, cork is super durable and water resis- tant, so a cork mat is the perfect place to dump wet and muddy boots whenever you come in from the rain.

If you already have a wine cork collection in the works, then you’re one step ahead. If not, then this is a good excuse to start one – and also to pick up an extra bottle of wine tonight. In addition to anywhere from 200 to 400 corks (de- pending on what size mat you want) you’re going to need some sort of durable but floor-friendly material on which to mount them. An old yoga mat is perfect since it’s also designed to stay in place.

Japanese pocket box used in the ancient times

2016-02-16

INROU is a traditional Japanese pocket box used in the ancient times

to carry medicines and small objects. Inspired by this tradition of carrying valuable items in a pocket box we developed this backpack by mixing this Japanese tradition with the Portuguese ‘tarro’( a cork container used in the south of Portugal to preserve food). We created a monocoque of cork which protects nowadays most precious object, the laptop.

This project was developed for ‘The future of cork applications competition’ promoted by Corticeira AMORIM and Domaine the Boisbuchet. The 20 best proposals had the possibility to produce the prototype in a specialized workshop at Domaine de Boisbuchet, supported by the designer duo Pedrita and a team of Amorim experts. It was a privilege to make part of this initiative and bring the INROU backpack to life.

DIY - Home made cork containers, just lovely for you office or home

Home made cork containers, just lovely for you office or home.

Almost two years ago, I bookmarked a wonderful tutorial from Design Sponge for a cork lamp. I just loved the idea and wanted to translate it in another way. But for some reason, I kind of forgot about it as time went on, and then this weekend when I was rinsing out some cans to put into the recycling bin, I remembered. I had also just bought some beautiful tulips, and immediately knew exactly what to make. A cork vase to hold notes, photographs, and of course flowers.
