3 easy DIY projects made from wine corks

2013-11-22

Lovely ideas for the weekend

With all of those wine bottles passed, poured and shared between friends also comes conversation, good cheer ... and a ton of tiny corks.

Their traditional role may be bottlenecking, but corks can be quickly crafted into decorative place cards, coasters, cheese markers and more. These fairly simple DIY ideas will inspire you to make the most of your (free) cork collection.

Looking for last-minute gift ideas or something simple to give to a holiday hostess? These cork crafts make great upcycled gifts, too.

Festive Wreath

Show off corks from your favorite vintages by creating this versatile wreath.

Finish it off with a ribbon that matches your home's décor--and change it up from season to season.

Materials:

50 corks
9” craft ring
Hot-glue gun
Decorative ribbon

Craft time: 15 minutes

1. Hot-glue 25 corks around the 9” craft ring. Be sure to line up the bottom edge of the cork with the inner edge of the craft ring.

2. With the remaining 25 corks, create a second layer that is about ½” in from the inner edge of the craft ring by hot-gluing these corks in between the first layer of corks.

3. Cut a length of ribbon and tie it in a bow around the top of the wreath.

Cheese Tags

Wine and cheese are paired together all of the time, so why not put wine corks to work as cheese labels for your next party? These markers take no time to make, and guests will appreciate knowing what they’re slicing into.

Materials:

Cork
Permanent marker
Paper clip

Craft time: 2 minutes per marker

1. Write the name of the cheese on the side of the cork using a permanent marker.

2. Open and bend a paper clip so that it forms a straight line.

3. Wrap one end of the opened paper clip around the bottom of the cork, and then bend the bottom down to form a stake.

3. Gently push the cork marker into the cheese wedge, and then serve.

Personalized Place Cards

Set the scene for your dinner party with reusable place cards. Add a bottle of red and a bottle of white to the table and you’ll have yourself a wine-themed soiree that even amateur sommeliers will appreciate.

Materials:

1 cork per place card
Utility knife
Scissors
Cardstock
Marker

Craft time: 2 minutes per place card

1. Use a utility knife to cut a lengthwise slit in the cork. (You may need to run the knife through the groove a few times.)

2. With scissors, cut a small rectangle from a piece of cardstock, and write a guest's name on it.

3. Slide the cardstock place card into the slit in the cork, and then place in the appropriate spot on the table.
